Why do we get wrinkled? It has to do with the breakdown of the protein called collagen. It is a dominant fiber component in the leather skin connective tissue that gives the skin its elasticity and resilience. Collagen fibers mostly go vertically to the skin surface and support tissues, provide structure and firmness. The collagen "fills in" and gives elasticity to the skin, but like the elastin tissue, the collagen weakens as we get older. As a result, the skin "cracks" and wrinkles occur.
